The National Academy
of Sciences, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U. S.
Congress and, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine
entitled Indoor Allergens: Assessing and Controlling Adverse
Health Affects, "One of five Americans will experience
allergy related illness at some point in their lives and indoor
allergens will be responsible for a substantial number of these
cases...." According to the National Research Council,
about 15 to 20 percent of the population (50 million people
) in the United States already suffers from increased allergic
sensitivity. These include chemicals, mold fungi, dust
and inadequate heating and ventilation systems, VOC's (Volatile
Organic Compounds) and other toxins that cause Building Related
Illness (BRI), Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), which can
lead to total disability. People are now experiencing
the symptoms of these conditions and need to have environmentally
clean homes so they can reduce the impact of environmental toxins
